Mijo Modern Mexican

After a few months away, I was excited to dive back into the Las Vegas Happy Hour scene, and Mijo Modern Mexican did not disappoint. Nestled inside the new Durango Resort Casino, Mijo greets you with a dramatic, upscale hallway entrance that immediately sets the tone. You know from the start that you’re walking into more than just another Mexican restaurant—it’s a polished, modern dining experience. The Mexican-American staff are authentic, approachable, and genuinely knowledgeable about both food and cocktails, which adds to the welcoming vibe.

Mijo only launched its Happy Hour a couple of months ago, but they’ve already nailed it. Offered from 4–6 PM, Happy Hour delivers a fun, lively atmosphere with prices that encourage sampling. I ordered their most popular drink, the Spicy Mango Margarita. It’s everything you want in a cocktail—smooth, refreshing, and balanced with just the right amount of heat. To pair, I went with the Chicken Quesadillas. Every order at the bar also comes with a generous portion of chips and salsa, making it easy to linger over a drink and snack.

Mijo also has a stylish dining room and a lovely outdoor patio if you prefer a full-service setting. But the real trick is timing: get there around 5 PM for Happy Hour, then when it ends at 6, slip into their hidden speakeasy, The Wax Rabbit, tucked discreetly into the hallway entrance. It’s not part of Happy Hour, but its old-Vegas speakeasy vibe, luxury finishes, and soothing lighting are worth the detour. If you’re around on a Tuesday, their Taco Tuesday with a live DJ from 6–9 PM adds another layer of fun to the evening.

Mijo also has a strong online presence—its website captures the same upscale energy you’ll feel in person. Crowds build quickly later in the night, so I recommend enjoying Happy Hour first, then staying to experience the lively dinner crowd and The Wax Rabbit afterward.

Overall, Mijo is more than a Happy Hour stop—it’s a full evening experience. Excellent cocktails, authentic staff, vibrant food, and one of the best transitions from bar to speakeasy in town make it a must-visit at Durango.
